Erwood Inn

Erwood Inn is situated in Erwood Village, seven miles south of Builth Wells, on the A470. The pub was originally built as a drover's inn, offering accommodation to travellers and animals on their way to London.  It is reputed to have been the secret hideaway used by Henry Mayhew, when  he fled from London.

The inn is in close proximity to the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains, and there are lots of local places of interest. One of our nearby villages was the location for scenes from An American Werewolf in London, and we have a Howitzer gun aimed directly at us! We also have links to Henry Mayhew, one of the co-founders of Punch magazine. He is reputed to have lived here after fleeing from London, having recently been  declared bankrupt. Wandering Minstrel, one of our cask ales, is named after one of Mayhew's plays and can only be found here. We now offer a range of other guest beers, so it's always worth popping in to see what's on.

Today we offer real ales, simple food and basic accommodation, in keeping with the building's historical roots. You can book by phoning, emailing or writing.  We serve food from till 9.30pm Wednesday to Sunday, offering a menu that appeals  to every palate. Sunday lunch is served from twelve till three using only the best local ingredients. If you don't see something on the menu, ask, as we may be able to do it!

Wandering Minstrel

our very own ale

Henry Mayhew was born in London, one of the seventeen children of Joshua Mayhew. He was educated at Westminster School before running away from his studies, to sea. He served with the East India Company as a midshipman on a ship bound for Calcutta, before returning to Britain to become a trainee lawyer in Wales. After a time he became a freelance journalist.  In 1835 Mayhew found himself in a state of debt, and reputedly fled to Erwood Inn, where he 'holed up' as he fled from his creditors, occupying his time writing. Mayhew then spent over ten years in Paris, returning to England in the 1850s , when he became involved in several literary adventures, mostly the writing of plays. Two of his plays -But, However and the Wandering Minstrel were successful. Today, Erwood Inn offers Wandering Minstrel, a real ale brewed solely for us.

Why not visit us and try a pint of two? Let us know what you think!
